| Blame Degrassi |

Before R&B sensation Drake or “Dizzy Drake”, was in with the Young Money crew he had a leading role in Degrassi as character Jimmy Brooks. Jimmy gets broken up with repeatedly and literally shot in the back, which results in his being confined to a wheelchair. Though he overcomes adversity and discovers his musical talent through this disability, he still gets his heart broken a third time. Maybe it’s this Degrassi baggage that’s been weighing down on the young Canadian, but something is on Drake’s mind. He’s single-handedly making R&B Emo—that’s right, Emo-Emo. R. Kelly’s “It Seems Like Your Ready” R&B, is suddenly a whole lot less unapologetically sexual and strong—now R&B has…feelings. Let’s check Drake’s twitter: Back then it was weed, girls, and basketball...now its greed, hurt, and alcohol...but love never dies. 10:07 PM Aug 16th via Twitter for BlackBerry® He just wrote the word “hurt”. Would Trey “Which One Of Y’all’s Going Home With Trigga?!” Songz, tweet about ambiguous depression and redemptive love? I think not. Hip Hop and R&B is generally quite boastful. Take fellow chart topper Soulja Boy and his hit “Pretty Boy Swag” as an example. It goes like this:
All the girls are on me, damn/ Everybody pay attention/This right here is my pretty boy swag (ayeee)/Pretty boy swag(ayye)x3/Girls on my dick when I pretty boy swag/Girls scream my name when I pretty boy swag.
..And than he calls himself sexy like four times. Drake has taken a more humble route; you can almost always tell one of his songs because there’s a line about dying alone or not being married at thirty. Maybe he needs to see “Eat Pray Love” for a little inspiration. Either way, I appreciate the change in R&B subject matter, even if it does get a little self-indulgently sad at times. We’re just going to have to wait and see if Drake finds his love, even though Ashley didn’t want to get back with Jimmy. Trackback(0)

Haha I agree-the self loathing is way too emo for hip hop-I'd rather hear about bow big your dick is then how your girl cheated on you. Funny stuff

The cultural thing to blame is not degrassi, it's his Canadian-ness which makes him of course more humble and more emo. See: K'naan, Alanis... etc.

This explains a lot, thank god I read this; my love for Drake just wasn't adding up, cuz let's face it the kid's fugly and may have swag but it's not the pretty boy kind. As a reformed emo-head this new genre of R&B let's my true soul come out to...(somehow) grind AND cry. Not only does it make sense he's Canadian, his birthday is also October 24th. Go figure, that's the day before mine.

Degrassi has held a special place in my heart for a long time. It has been difficult for me to separate Drake from Jimmy, but he is clearly a lot more than his role on the show. Like most hip hop, I can appreciate the music without always related to the lyrics.
His Canadian background only adds to the legitimacy of his hip hop career, i.e.; K-os, Classified, Shad. written by Kathrine, August 18, 2010
Um, incorrect, Jimmy dumped Ashley after she was mean about his rapping, and then Jimmy got with Trina the dreadlocked girl at the rehab place, pretty sure they got married...
sorry..don't mean to be a bitch...I love me some Jimmy/Drake

being a fellow canadian, and fellow torontonian (grew up close to degrassi, and yes it's a real school, and i went to high school with lauren collins aka "Paige") anyway-yes it's a canadian thing. the entire country is self conscious and humble and afraid of what people think-Canadians are just too nice. So is this guy Drake. I'm not anymore, which is why I can never move back.

yyyeah drake may not have pretty boy swag but he certainly is making the most of the syrian-gas-station-attendant-in-dyker-heights look

Please don't say "confined to a wheelchair". For someone with a disability, a wheelchair is something that helps them be liberated and get around better, not a source of confinement.

I think maybe if Bust is going to try and crossover between tangible magazine and web-articles, they should strive to do some better editing. It's bad enough that almost everyone under the age of 20 can't tell the difference between "your" and "you're," but I would hope Bust (my favourite magazine, by the way!) could do a little better.

I don't know anything about Degrassi, or Drake for that matter, but it seems like it's time that musicians get a bit humble. Cute article.

Aubrey Graham is uber-gifted as an actor and musician. I'm so happy for his success, and think it's totally sweet that he is taking this approach.
And he is NOT fugly. He's hot.
