Molly Hamilton has had a year. The type of year “up-and-coming” musicians emerge from and their less dedicated peers wither under. It's what turns a talented "somebody" into a notable "someone."
Widowspeak's early 2013 release "Almanac" was bathed in overwhelming attention from the indie press and reset the motion on a sound left fallow by forebearers Mazzy Star and Ennio Morricone. Hamilton, along with writing partner Robert Earl Thomas, spent ... Read More
As the daughter of Sub Pop co-founder Bruce Pavitt, I was raised on the stories of grunge lore. Tales of criss-crossing the country in dilapidated tour vans full of sweaty rockstar hopefuls, record signings at legendary stores like Rough Trade in England, members of Pussy Galore being frightened when greeted by our pet pygmy goat; Kurt Cobain smashing his guitar and leaping off speaker towers. Our family photo albums show a very chubby baby on tour in Japan and ... Read More

This was just one of the many moments that made me realize that this special movie--which discusses sexuality, letting ... Read More

On Wednesday evening, The New York Times’s Frank Bruni was enjoying a cab ride home from dinner at New York’s Barbuto when he saw an inconspicuous little iPhone sitting on the seat beside him. Without a case and yet perfectly intact, he took the lost phone home and waited for it to ring. To his dismay, the phone was impenetrable. But there was a stream of texts coming in from celebrity contacts like psychic Peri Lyons and stylist Lo’renzo ... Read More
While Dr. Phil’s show is best known for bringing paternity fights and relationship advice to America’s homes, his wife Robin McGraw clearly has more altruistic ambitions, as she proved with the debut of ASPIRE News, her new free iPhone and Android app for victims of domestic abuse. The app is disguised as a typical news outlet, with stories from the day powered by Yahoo! News, but the “Help” section is a hidden guide to resources for ... Read More
My grandmother was an artist, and throughout her career, she’d make abstract sculptures and embroidery that I’d stare at for hours as a child: “oh, that looks like a face, and that there? That’s an animal.” Our play was art-making, and I was always amazed at how different her aesthetic would become when she was with me. Her paper dolls weren’t abstract at all; I’d make an abstract shape, and she’d magically ... Read More
