Look what I found while cleaning off my computer! Laurie's daughter Olive and Janeane Garofalo our cover girl in 1999, and she is wearing one of the original BUST shirts (which you can still get ... Read More
(Not to mention cute NYPD detectives) The New School protest/occupation is happening right across the street from the BUST office, so we've been out on the fire escape watching! (Those of us who can get through the police barricade, that is). But unfortunately the cops started yelling at us so we had to go back inside and just watch from the windows. Luckily I took plenty of pictures on my phone, which you can go look at if the slideshow isn't working for ... Read More

An Equal Rights *woot*

BY Web Intern in General

More good news, marriage rights-wise. We all know that last week Iowa granted same-sex couples the right to marry. Now, Vermont has legalized gay marriage - the state legislature voted to override Governor Jim Douglas'; veto of the bill they had approved. Also, the District of Columbia is going to start recognizing gay marriages from other states as legal. Hopefully more states will follow suit. But I'm cautious about my optimism on an issue this divisive. ... Read More
Embedded video from CNN Video I would like to be able to say that this was a parody from The Onion or something - but no. It's from CNN. This is government censorship at its finest (and most hilarious). Apparently Colorado denied this woman's request for a pro-vegan license plate because they thought ''ILVTOFU'' could be, ahem, ... Calling all word nerds! The Williamsburg Spelling Bee has more contests coming up. In fact, there are five more competitions before the finals on June 22. So grab your dictionary and start brushing up on your 50-cent words. Last year's big winner went home with $150 and a twenty-volume-long 80th anniversary edition of the Oxford English Dictionary (I know it's tradition, but wouldn't the dictionary be better used by the losing competitors?). He also got a nifty ... Read More

Your Sister's Alright

BY Web Intern in General

Everybody needs a sister-- at least if the results of a new study from the University of Ulster in Ireland hold true. Researchers at the school recently asked 571 people ages 17 to 25 about their lives and discovered that the ones who grew up with sisters tend to be happier and more balanced, according to the BBC . People with brothers, on the other hand, had more 'distress.' 'Sisters appear to encourage more open communication and cohesion in families,' ... Read More

Bye bye, Sweet Tater!

BY Web Intern in General

This recession hasn't deemed fair to many of our beloved boutiques; keeping their heads above water to be true to their dreams and their following, only to be held down by these ugly times. Not cute. It's the sweet, quaint shops that flood our senses with endless walls of creative one-of-a-kinds and vintage finds that lift our spirits when we walk away with something special. Speaking of a boutique as such, Sweet Tater in NYC will be closing shop on April ... Read More
