A 19th-century artist designed a "map" to the woman’s heart, “exhibiting its internal communications, and the facilities and dangers to Travelers therein." It may seem innocuous, but this piece of odd artwork spells out a lot about the culture's ideas of what was important to women back then. The map heavily emphasizes vanity and self-centeredness: Love of Display, Love of Dress, and Love of Admiration take up a lot of the landscape. Below these areas, ... Read More
Women are chatting about all sorts of issues in salons, but we're not talking about spots where you can get your hair cut and colored. Glynda Carr and Kimberly Peeler-Allen of Higher Heights for America (which they founded in 2011) are organizing social gatherings where intellectual conversations and cultural discussions ensue--the kinds of salons that have been held for centuries.    (Above, a 17th-century women's salon) Higher Heights creates ... Seeing as how the women in our military risk their lives every single day while on duty, it would only seem logical that they should have the best health care possible. Unfortunately, this is definitely not the case. Servicewomen and dependents are currently banned from using their insurance coverage for abortion if they are a victim of rape or incest. It’s deplorable, and a new group, Stand with Servicewomen, has come together to fight the ban. New ... Read More
Two members of Pussy Riot, the Russian feminist punk band that has taken over the news lately, have fled Russia. There are 12 remaining members of the band still in Russia, not including the three who were recently sentenced to prison terms. The two that have fled are reportedly trying to avoid persecution by Russian police, as five members of the band were part of the infamous protest against Putin in February, but only three were arrested. The band stated on its ... Read More
DEFCON is a tech conference held annually in Las Vegas that allows thousands of hackers to learn about the latest ways to crack into any and all types of online security systems. Sounds fun, right? But over the past few years, many women who’ve attended DEFCON have reported that they’ve been victims of sexual harassment. Along with the typical techy stuff, a large part of the convention consists of recreational events for the hackers, like ... Read More
We love the Feminist Ryan Gosling blog so very much, but now there’s a new feminist meme in town-- one that centers around President Obama.    In light of the many recent Republican attacks on women, we're particularly loving Obama's comments in favor of women's reproductive rights. Nerve.com has turned some of the best quotes into fantastic "Hey Girl" images (essentially, actual Obama quotes preceded by, "Hey girl").   He’s also pointed ... Read More
Kreayshawn, the badass rapper who pumped swag out of her ovaries and meowed at us in her much-discussed 2011 single “Gucci Gucci," is still in the game. In fact, she's about to release her debut album, Somethin ‘Bout Kreay, on September 18 (instead of the previously announced date August 14) through Columbia Records. The album will featured a cast of heavy-hitter collaborations with artists like Diplo, Sissy Nobby, 2 Chainz, and Kid Cudi. ... Read More
A few months back, we put out a call for submissions, asking fashion bloggers to send shots of themselves in the outfits they thought they'd be wearing and loving come fall. We received so many amazing entries that it was tough to pick our favorites, but we showed off some fantastic ladies in our August/September issue. We didn't have enough room to include all the details of these great getups, but have no fear: you can find out everything you need to know below. ... Read More

Russian feminist punk band Pussy Riot has been in the news nearly daily lately, and with good reason. The announcement of the members' two-year prison sentences has mobilized and outraged so many of us, and sparked an outpouring of support from around the globe. Three masked activists in Germany were recently arrested for staging a "Free Pussy Riot" protest inside a cathedral, and Madonna and Kathleen Hanna even lent them support. Now a new project, Lets Start a ... Read More
