Halloween is approaching quickly, and there’s one city that has a little-known obsession with the holiday: Portland, Oregon! We asked Portland’s Sallie Ford and the ladies of her new, all-girl rock band for some tips and tricks for the season of the witch. Weighing in are Sallie Ford (vocals/guitar), Anita Lee Elliot (bass), Amanda Spring (drums), and Cristina Cano (keyboards). Check out the interview below to find out who had an exorcism ... Read More
You probably already knew that our government leaders are predominately white and male, and that our country isn’t predominately white and male. Why is this a problem? Well, without the issues of the citizens in mind, the majority is likely to suffer. Having the access to vote doesn’t aid in fighting for all demographics, but allowing leadership of all races and genders will create more equal representation.  With the help of Women Donors Network, ... Portland’s women in comedy showcase, All Jane, No Dick, does not aim to prove that women are funnier than men... but, if you need proof, have a gander at the seriously unfunny “men’s rights activists” who are protesting the festival. The annual festival, coming up Oct. 15, was founded by Stacey Hallal three years ago. All Jane, No Dick provides an enthusiastic stage for a diverse group of girl goofballs to shine in a business that, like ... Read More
Tomorrow, Oct. 14, join Restaurant Opportunities Centers United (ROC – United) and One Billion Rising in a National Day of Action for ONE FAIR WAGE and an end to gender discrimination and sexual harassment in the restaurant industry. Help support women in an unfair wage war. Women of color and low-income women who depend on tips are especially put at a disadvantage. Restaurants are the fastest growing industry but employ the lowest paid workers. We have to ... Read More
In conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, today is a National No Bra Day. However the hashtag #NoBraDay is becoming sexualized and somehow inviting offensive comments and behavior in the social media universe. Twitter seems to be missing the point. What some people might not understand about National Bra Day is that it isn’t just about being free from the social protocol of wearing a bra, or as Jess in the TV show New Girl puts it, ...   Last week, the ladies of Speed Rack — the nationwide competition for female bartenders that raises money for breast-cancer charities — were engaged in a brutal face-off. But instead of racing each other to see who could create the best gin fizz in under two minutes, these pro mixologists were speed-skating around a roller-derby track in Los Angeles. Speed Rack partnered with the 10-year-old L.A. Derby Dolls and Sailor Jerry rum to treat these top-notch ... Read More
The New York Comic Con enforced a harassment policy this year, including the motto "Cosplay is Not Consent." The new rules stated that permission is needed to take a picture or in anyway interact with a cosplayer. Any harassment experienced can be immediately reported to any staff member through the office or the Comic Con App.   I spent a good part of my day interviewing attendees, mostly women, about how they feel about these rules, the Con this year, and ... If you haven't already heard, last week 17-year-old Pakistani teen Malala Yousafzai became the youngest person to ever receive the Nobel Peace Prize. You go girl! For the majority of her life, Malala has been advocating for education of girls. She has expressed that she believes that with a more educated world, it will become a better place. Malala grew up in the Taliban-occupied Swat Valley, where her father started a school for girls. The school was overtaken by ... Read More
Gumbo is a New Orleans treat that is hard to match. Due to National Gumbo Day approaching fast (yes, it's a thing!), this Sunday, October 12 to be exact, I have complied some recipes to try if you can't make it to the soulful NOLA. Before you begin, know that there are two types of Gumbo, and that it is a Creole dish, not a Cajun one. Type one is based on okra the African vegetable, and two, is thickened with gumbo file, which is powdered sassafras leaves, ... Read More
Neil the lion is going viral, following a Retronaut post on Mashable earlier this week. Neil was the household pet of actors Tippi Hedren and Noel Marshall, and Hedren's daughter Melanie Griffith, in 1971. Griffith was 19 years old in the photos. The family lived together on a ranch in California while Hedren and Marshall prepared for their 1981 film Roar.  Melanie and Neil lay in bed.  Tippi Hedren reads on Neil. Hedren is best known for her ... Read More
