Super-Mom/action figure designer duo Julie Kerwin and Dawn Nadeau saw a problem: the hyper-sexualized asses, the enormous breasts, and the impossibly tiny waists of female action figures.  “There are female action figures,” Nadeau explains, “but they’re designed for the adult male collector population,” explains Nadeau.  Children’s toys should celebrate more than just a woman’s body!  (Particularly if by ... Redemption Trail is a story that unfolds slowly with a certain inevitability; set on a rural vineyard in Oakland, it doesn’t seem like the world exists outside the fences of the warm, summery fields. Whatever happens within this world is fated to happen. Written and directed by Britta Sjogren, the movie focuses on two women that force each other to face their demons while forgiving themselves in the process. Tess (Lisa Gay Hamilton) lives hermetically on her ... Read More
Some say that Lizzo is the greatest word-play rapper since the heyday of hip-hop. The Houston-bred, Minneapolis-based emcee is taking the world by storm with her clever raps and impeccable flow. After the release of LIZZOBANGERS (on label Totally Gross National Product) in 2013, she has been releasing music videos and getting ready for some live performances (she’s performing at Glastonbury among other festivals and shows). She just released some more U.S. ... Read More
800 four-year colleges and universities are “test-optional” meaning that submitting SAT or ACT tests as part of the application is not a requirement. However, students applying to more selective schools will almost always submit, and these schools will almost always look at the scores to influence their admissions decision. Last week, Hampshire College in Amherst, MA announced that it will now implement a “test-blind” policy. It will no ... Read More
New music releases have been coming out left and right - and now we can add Grimes to that list as well! Last night on BBC Radio 1, she debuted her new single “GO (feat. Blood Diamonds)”.    Though she stays in her electronic wheelhouse, “GO” greatly departs from the magical sprite-meets-Windows ’98 sound we’ve come to love (and expect) from her. Instead, her new single is very trap-house, complete with a drop and no ... Read More
The Supreme Court has unanimously struck down the 35-foot buffer zones that surround abortion clinics in Massachusetts. The reasoning behind the decision has to do with anti-abortion protesters’ First Amendment right to free speech.   The 35-foot zones have been in effect since 2007, allowing those entering Planned Parenthood protection from protestors waiting outside. Protestors see it much differently, as one of their main complaints regarding the ... Read More
On June 9th blogger Nathan Biberdorf posted an article on his wordpress blog titled “Not Everyone Is Beautiful.” Guess what? This article is exactly what you think it is: some dude wanting to lash out against the body-positivity movement by being the thorn in your side that reminds you that you might actually not be beautiful.  Bull. Shit. That’s right. I call bullshit. While this article does make wonderfully smart points about our ... Read More
Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, creators and stars of the webseries-turn-Comedy Central hit Broad City, are not so secretly feminist. Even just a quick google search for “Broad City feminist” yields pages of positive results.   So it should be no surprise to find that they definitely confirmed it in this Popsugar interview. “I would totally say I’m a feminist,” Jacobson says.  And unlike many celebrities, the two actually ... Relz, Bella, and Sierra are 6-year-old girls who dream of going to the X games. The bff trio make up the Pink Helmet Posse. These rough and tumble girls were profiled in their matching pink helmets in a short Op- Doc by The New York Times. Every minute of this doc is seriously more adorable and badass than the last. One moment the girls are painting their nails in the middle of the skate park and the next they are crushing it on the half- pipe.  While these ... Read More
On Sunday evening, every single bar I passed on New York’s Second Avenue was packed with both women and men, screaming at the top of their lungs and cheering for the USA in their World Cup match against Portugal. According to CNN, similar scenes were scattered across Iran this past Saturday. Restaurants were packed with fans - both women and men - who were excitedly cheering on their country’s team in the nail-biting match against ... Read More
