I'm Having a What?

BY Web Intern in General

When one of my sisters found out she was expecting, she immediately said, 'I hope it's a girl.' She wanted to buy the adorable pink clothing, toys, etc. and thought that it would easier to raise a girl nowadays. When her sonogram revealed a little member...well, she was a tad disappointed. Hell, I think she shed a tear or two. Now that my nephew is nearly six years old and full of spunk, she couldn't imagine things being any different. For some ladies, getting ... Read More

ED Talk

BY intern Amber in General

Eating disorders are getting much needed public awareness these days. We know much more about the disease thanks to celebrities and models speaking out on their body abuse issues. And great organizations like the National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) are pushing local and national Government to provide funding for more research and help to young women struggling. NEDA, the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED), and others are joining forces with the Greek ... Read More

You Eat This?!

BY Web Intern in General

I was wandering around the Serious Eats website, a food blog about chow in the NYC area, and spotted this odd baked good. In Barbara Kingsolver's book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, you can find a recipe for Frida Kahlo's Pan de Muerta, which is a traditional Day of the Dead treat made to honor those that have passed on. Oh Ms. Kahlo, I don't know if this is what you were going for with your recipe but know that I find it somewhat cute and ... Read More
While being a sicky-poo this weekend I caught up on YouTube videos and boy, I found a unique diddy. Jack's (wouldn't it be nice to be on a first name basis with him? I think so) most recent project, The Dead Weather, just put out a new video for the single I Cut Like A Buffalo a couple of weeks back and I can't believe I am this late in seeing it! Jack looking as fine as ever in a video he himself directed?! I'll take it! And another thing, if you're familiar with ... Read More

Absolute Death: A Review

BY Sarah J. in General

The first graphic novel I ever bought was Death: The High Cost of Living. I was a teenage gothette just figuring out that there were all sorts of strange and wonderful things out there that I hadn't discovered yet, and then one day my friend came to school with a little thing called the Death Gallery, full of these gorgeous pictures of this little goth girl that sorta even looked like me (if you squinted and washed out the color). What the heck was that? I'd seen ... Read More
I know, I know, it's Twilight, and Bella Swan is probably the most anti-feminist character in the history of 'literature,' but this soundtrack is GOOD! The last one was laughably terrible and full of your standard Hot Topic fare: Paramore, Linkin Park, and a mid-90s-esque ballad from R-Patz himself. But this one's got original tunes from the likes of Thom Yorke, Lykke Li, and Bon Iver and St. Vincent. I know, right? My personal favorite is 'Slow Life' by Grizzly ... Read More

Sufjan Stevens played his second show at the Bowery Ballroom on October 5th as part of a small tour he is performing to workshop some new songs. Opening band Cryptacize got the sold-out show warmed up with pretty song stylings and herky jerky dance moves provided by lead singer Nedelle Torrisi. Nedelle also took the stage for background vocal duties during the entirety of Sufjan's set. The start of the evening was a bit rough due to a confusing mush of lines ... Read More
This just in -- a new 'younger' version of Thelma and Louise is in the works and is set to star Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl) and Amber Heard (Pineapple Express). Leighton, we love you as Blair Waldorf, but can you really handle a classic like T and L? It's like asking us to believe Serena van der Woodsen can do Shakespeare -- it just ain't gonna happen. Plus the title is Cowgirl Bandits. Who gave this the green light? And how come I don't have their job? So ... Read More
Clare And The Reasons are listed as being Chinese Traditional music on their MySpace profile, but they are not Chinese nor Traditional. What they are is a Brooklyn based band fronted by Clare Manchon who is releasing its second album, Arrow, on October 20th. The first initial notes off of Arrow are sweet in such a way as to fool listeners into settling in for what they think may be a placid ride into musical dreamland. That doesn't last for long. Five ... Read More
