Frack This! Yoko Ono & Sean Lennon Lead Peaceful Protest PDF Print E-mail

Yoko Ono and son Sean Lennon have assembled a coalition of artists against fracking in New York, aptly named Artists Against Fracking. In case you didn't know, fracking involves using massive amounts of chemically treated water to tap into underground rock deposits, which are rich with natural gas. Although there has been research into the safety of this process, many people, like Ono, are concerned about the chemicals involved in the process and the possibility that they'll contaminate our water and air. Rightfully so, since many of the chemicals involved are carcinogenic and non-biodegradable. Yikes.

Other artists who've joined the anti-fracking group--which is now comprised of 146 members--include Paul McCartney, Lady Gaga, Zooey Deschanel, and Mark Ruffalo. Artists Against Fracking is calling on New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to put a ban on the environmentally dangerous process.

You can join the movement by sending him a message or calling him through AAF's website. Though drilling is set to begin soon, Ono believes the process will be stopped before it starts, saying, “Logic will overcome everything.” As more high-profile New Yorkers join the protest, and more news outlets report on it, it seems plausible that the governor may take notice. We New Yorkers sure hope so.
