|Wendy Davis Running For Governor #inthosesneakers?|
It looks like Wendy Davis, the Texas State Senator who made headlines back in June for her 11 hour filibuster of a bill that would expand abortion restrictions, is just getting started. According to Politico, Davis has been telling Democrats that she plans to run for governor in 2014.
Although no official announcement has been made by Davis herself, the senator tweeted a fundraising request in anticipation of “something big” to be announced next week, and now, according to CNN, two democratic sources have confirmed her intent to run.
If she announces her candidacy, Davis will most likely face Greg Abbot, the Republican state Attorney General, in Texas’s first uncontested race for governor since 1990. Current Governor Rick Perry has chosen not to run for re-election.
Davis made waves earlier this year, filibustering an anti-abortion bill for eleven hours without being able to eat, drink, sit, use the restroom, speak off topic, or even lean against anything. The bill proposed banning abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, requiring clinics to meet the same standards as hospitals, and mandating that the doctors who perform abortions have admittance to local hospitals. Though Davis’s filibuster was enough to postpone voting, Governor Perry called a special second session in July where both the House and the Senate passed the bill.
Still, Davis (and her now famous pink sneakers) showed her support for women and their rights in a major way. Here’s hoping that Wendy Davis continues to be a significant voice in Texan politics!
