Remember Andy Warhol’s 1960s New York “Factory,” filled to the brim with feminists, working and single woman, and artists? For his recent project, the photographer Pascal Pierrou hopes to present a modern vision of similar women who refuse to conform to conventional beauty standards by shaving their heads or filling their flesh with stunning tattoos.

His decision to photograph his subjects under a sort of stylized, high fashion aesthetic works to subvert the idea that beauty must fit a destructively limited and Westernized definition. These women are often nude but never sexualized, a picture of sex positivity. When they do glance at the camera, it’s not a sexual invitation to the viewer but a social and political confrontation. Slut shaming is kicked to the curb, as one woman reveals an ironic tattoo near her vulva that can be assumed as a nod to patriarchal control of women’s bodies: “MYDADDIWILLKILLYOU.”

While it’s great to see a series that celebrates female sexual agency and expression, it’s discouraging that many of the women fit a pretty rigid mold of whiteness and slenderness. When we remember the feminists of the 1960s and embrace contemporary movements, it’s imperative that we acknowledge that women of all body types, ethnicity, and sexual orientation have been and continue to be critical to the movement. What do you think?
