Brooklyn College is Keeping D.I.Y Alive!

by Intern Jessica W.

Tonight, Brooklyn College will unveil “Fold, Staple, Share: Highlights from the Brooklyn College Zine Library.” This exhibition will run through the fall semester and spotlights noteable pieces from the collection of zines, which will then become a permanent part of the library that the college is implementing.

The collection will specialize in printed zines about Brooklyn, zines by the college’s alumni or zines about the art of self-publication itself. This sampling of printed matter has been lovingly and painstakingly collected by Alycia Sellie, media and cultural studies Librarian extraordinaire at the college. It took about two years to complete. The opening celebration will feature readings from zinesters Kate Angell, Elvis Batkatis, Tommy Pico and Kate Wadkins, among many other D.I.Y masterminds affiliated with the institution.

It will be held in the Cristoph M. Kimmich Reading Room on the first floor of the college. It is important to keep the art and triumph of self-published material alive, where untainted visions and the ability to share our voices is invaluable. Keep the cut and paste medium alive!
