Quick: name a famous inventor. Is it a man? Women continue to fight hard to gain recognition as inventors. Scientific fields and patenting usually favor the dudes, but women created a lot of things that make our modern lives easy and efficient. We were inspired by Mental Floss's list of inventions by ladies and wanted to share them (and add a few), so take a look at twenty five items to be thankful for, and give these women a big round of ... In today's extremely-important-you-really-need-to-read-this feminist news, various sources are reporting that elephants and dogs have been recently seen frolicking together.
We first received the news this morning, when the Huffington Post uncovered the story that Bubbles and Bella, an elephant and a dog, are totes besties. As revealed in the video below, they do indeed seem to be quite attached to each other.

Getting antsy waiting for the new season of Downton Abbey? I kinda am. Unfortunately, we are going to have to wait until 2014 (Jan 4, to be exact), until the series returns.
Luckily for us, however, the geniusly talented artist Kim Parkhurst has created a series of paintings which portray each of the major players as animals. And damned if she hasn't nailed the right animal for each character. Like Anna, above, as a greyhound? Perfect!
Even better, though, ... Read More
Sarah Silverman recently illuminated the internet about the 14-years she spent with her dog, Duck, through a beautifully-written, heartfelt obituary that sometimes even the best of people don’t receive. Silverman wrote about how they first met at a no-kill animal shelter in Van Nuys, CA, where Duck was placed after being found running through South Central Los Angeles without any form of identification. She detailed how happy, yet stoic, he was, and ... Read More
Meet Tsunami, the cancer-fighting dog
You’ve heard stories about dogs saving lives (my own dog shielded me from a fire when I was a newborn!), but here’s a new one for you: some really amazing dogs are learning how to detect ovarian cancer before modern medicine can. That’s right: dogs can detect faint odors associated with the disease.
The dogs over at the University of Pennsylvania’s Working Dog Center are being trained to ... Read More
Castles tend to stand the tests of time. The visually arresting corridors of Downton Abbey, known in the real world as Highclere Castle, have experienced and seen a lot, but when it comes to dogs (and mud), it's apparently a different story. After a “ruckus” on set, Lady Carnavon, owner of the castle, ordered a ban on all cast members’ dogs. Several canines were getting a little too rowdy, romping and rolling through the set, dragging mud and chewing rugs ... Read More
Like so many others, my life revolves around my dog. My dog Remy’s life, however, revolves around fetch. I am woken many mornings by a joyous bouncing of her rubber orange ball, so (naturally!) I am always on the lookout for new innovations in the field of fetch.
This is a big one, ladies, so pay attention. A very special dog hailing from Kobe, Japan has figured out a way to play fetch by himself with the aid of only a few rocks and a strong water ... Read More

Here’s one unusual animal pairing that’ll get your heart warming in no time. Little remains known about the story’s background, but the adorable photos tell it all: a mastiff adopted a baby chimpanzee as one of its own. Cue endless baby talk.
It’s unclear whether the baby chimp’s mother passed away or abandoned the newborn, but after a zoo caretaker took the chimp home and introduced it to the mastiff and her puppies, the ... Read More

America sure loves its dogs. Coming from Australia, I have been both shocked and delighted at the abundance of four-legged friends in New York. The streets are a veritable feast of pugs, Boston terriers, and rescued mutts, and there seems to be a cute pooch on every corner. I may/may not be using my housemate’s dog as a way to strike up conversations in the park. (Hey, I’m a long way from home, stop judging me!)
I'm also on constant lookout for a Lena ... Read More
