Members of the group Sangre Menstrual at their performance in support of the "Manifesto for the Visibility of the Period."
Sangre Menstrual, a Spanish performance group, took to the streets wearing white pants and shorts stained with menstrual blood in support of their “Manifesto for the Visibility of the Period.” Sangre Menstrual wrote the manifesto to point out that, by attempting to hide our periods, a perfectly natural bodily ... “All kids need to know this message […] you can be great,” explains the photographer Eunique Jones of her project Because Of Them We Can, a series if images in which kids dress up as inspirational figures in African American history and women’s history. The children, in engaging with figures who have achieved great acts of courage and activism, work to challenge prejudices about both race and gender.

Now we can officially stop talking about Miley-gate. No matter how tired we are of rehashing the VMA performance and “Wrecking Ball” video, Cyrus’ work does offer insight into how women are encouraged to express themselves and how young women are viewed by the public. Are Cyrus’ performances feminist and sex-positive as some claim? I personally think not; after all, she has a team of men who aren’t exactly known for respecting women ... Read More
The term “feminism” wasn’t coined until the second wave, and it caught on like wildfire. Gloria Steinem’s Ms. Magazine aimed to educate women on equality and open their eyes to injustices; the magazine explained that women (and men) just needed to feel the ideas “click” into place. And the best way to help someone have a “click” moment was through a relatable anecdote.

Although we at BUST are always sad to hear about a fellow print publication struggling, I can't say I'd miss Penthouse. Due to the availability of pornography on the internet, the porn magazine is having trouble making ends meet. Los Angeles Times reports, “the California company that owns Penthouse magazine, [online dating sites like FriendFinder] and a host of [...] adult websites filed for bankruptcy protection ... Here at BUST, Gloria Steinem is our golden girl, and apparently the White House thinks so too. The Associated Press reported last Thursday that Ms. Steinem was among the 16 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States’ highest civilian honor. Four other women were also chosen to receive the award: Oprah Winfrey, Sally Ride, country singer Loretta Lynn and glass-ceiling-breaking judge ... Read More

Gloria Steinem's Golden Bra Award acceptance speech was one of the highlights of our 20th Anniversary Extravaganza. (Let's be real--it was fan-fucking-tastic.)
Luckily, artist Gail Ahlers captured this magical moment on camera...and we're so excited to share it with you!
The video also includes some nifty behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the Golden Bra statuette. Can you believe it started off as a goofy sketch in the BUST conference ... Read More

Whew! We had quite a time this past Thursday at the 20th birthday celebration of BUST. There were loads of amazing ladies and dudes who rolled out to help us get down and have a good ol' time. We laughed, we cried, we danced, we ate cupcakes. It was an incredible, unforgettable experience (for at least this BUSTie) and it reminded us of how much BUST changed our lives and why we love it so, so much. (Sorry for the cheese, but it was kind of a big deal.) We're ... Read More

It was reported today that beloved co-founder of Ms. magazine passed away after a collision with a car on Friday. The car hit Thom who was riding her Honda Magna motorcycle on Saw Mill River Parkway in Yonkers. We at BUST are mourning a great loss, along with the countless others Thom affected as a writer, editor, and feminist icon. After co-founding Ms. magazine with Gloria Steinem and Letty Cottin Pogrebin, Thom went on to become an editor and later an executive ... Read More
