After the box-office failure of Disney's The Princess and the Frog, rumor was that Disney decided that fairy tales were a thing of the past; according to the LA Times, targeting only the little-girl market just wasn't enough. The studio's latest offering, Tangled, combines a take on a classic fairy-tale princess story with more modern elements, like CGI and wacky wise-cracking sidekicks, in order to attract a broader audience. And the movie did well on opening ... Read More

In the trailer for the new medieval (first of many mistakes!) stoner comedy, Your Highness, James Franco plays a straight man for some reason, Danny McBride plays the slovenly stoner brother, while Natalie Portman a sexy sex object who can beat up guys which is funny because she’s little and stuff.
And Zooey Deschanel plays that classic female character, the one who appears to be held captive/bound for a good part of the movie, awaiting rescue. (If ... Read More

In the trailer for the upcoming indie film Tiny Furniture, Leah Dunham, as 22-year old Aura, slouches home to her mother’s lux NYC loft apartment, dazed from four years of undergrad in Ohio (probably Oberlin.) Like a girl version of The Graduate, the newly adult Aura can’t quite figure out what to do with herself, though she does find time to fight with her mother and sister, take a hostess job, and put up fellow upper-upper-middle-class-liberal-arts ... Nothing makes me swoon more than an unconventionally bittersweet blossoming relationship between two supposed inanimate objects. Spike Jonze's new 35 minute mini film which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival conveys an honest, haunting and sincere picture of what it means fall in love and be a robot at the same time.
I'm Here is set in contemporary LA, at a time where strangely enough, robots and humans coexist. The evolution of robotic ... Read More

But I can't help but be excited about the new Harry Potter movie coming out in November.
It helps that the HP 7 trailer is super awesome looking (Hermione's jacket is a do-want), Team Starkid just came out with a Very Potter Sequel (Rita Skeeter and Dolores Umbridge have never been so cool), and Potter Puppet Pals now has their own channel with three new videos (sweet!)
Oops. My inner fan-girl is showing. Have some videos and enjoy the utter ... Read More
Ok, I’ll admit this blog post is about three months overdue. Although, I’d argue that it’s really never too late to draw attention to a good movie or an awesome young female character.
So I’m just going to proceed.
Last night I ended up watching the movie Kick-Ass on bootleg. I had dismissed the film when it came out back in April due to its seemingly lame premise (high school comic-book nerd wants to be a ... Read More

Katrina del Mar admittedly, and obviously, influenced by Russ Meyer, likes to make movies with tough girls. Dubbed "Charles Manson, with giant boobs" by a Hell on Wheels cast member, she is surrounded by wicked-cool, smart & talented women, lots of them, and she puts them all in her movies. Girls that roll, surf, skate, drive and canter - if it moves, her girls are doing it in skimpy leathers and heavy eyeliner. Someone's going to get hit, there's ... Read More

Helen Mirren has come a long way since her first acting role as the Virgin Mary in a convent school play, posing sans sackcloth in New York Magazine, to promote the upcoming Love Ranch. She's been a household name (in really smart houses) since the award winning Masterpiece Theater TV series, Prime Suspect. Netflix it if you haven't seen it. Netflix it even if you have.
Although the convent school nuns probably won't agree, Love Ranch may become my favorite ... Read More
Every summer we are treated to a slew of supposed blockbusters specifically designed to knock off socks, or at the very least, give us somewhere cool and dark to sit for twoish hours. Certainly this season will be no different, judging from Hollywood’s attempts to revive The Karate Kid, Predators, Cats and Dogs (…?), the Toy Story franchise (!!), and The A-Team (which, I have to admit, just will not be the same without Mr. T…Bradley Cooper or ... Finally! A teaser trailer for The Runaways starring Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie. Emphasis on the word 'teaser' -- it's less than a minute long. But you get to see 1) Dakota wearing some amazing '70s red streak blush and 2) K-Stew smash a chair. I've already watched it 3 times in the past 10 minutes.
