Halloween is approaching quickly, and there’s one city that has a little-known obsession with the holiday: Portland, Oregon! We asked Portland’s Sallie Ford and the ladies of her new, all-girl rock band for some tips and tricks for the season of the witch. Weighing in are Sallie Ford (vocals/guitar), Anita Lee Elliot (bass), Amanda Spring (drums), and Cristina Cano (keyboards). Check out the interview below to find out who had an exorcism ... Read More
Portland’s women in comedy showcase, All Jane, No Dick, does not aim to prove that women are funnier than men... but, if you need proof, have a gander at the seriously unfunny “men’s rights activists” who are protesting the festival.
The annual festival, coming up Oct. 15, was founded by Stacey Hallal three years ago. All Jane, No Dick provides an enthusiastic stage for a diverse group of girl goofballs to shine in a business that, like ... Read More

In a sea of generic Playboy and Hollywood bombshell calendars, there’s finally a calendar that honors the curvy, beautiful ladies of our lives. It’s rare these days to see women in the media that aren’t Photoshopped and airbrushed into oblivion. Thin bodies are glorified in our society, and too often every other type of body is not given the appreciation and representation they deserve. The portrayal of plus-sized bodies in the mainstream is ... Read More

Pull on your red pleather boots, slap on some lipstick and a pair of heart-shaped glasses and go out dancing. In a field. Or outside a post office. Or in the forest.
This is what front woman of HERS, Melissa L. Amstutz, does in the video for "Please." She places her hand stiffly on her head, positioning her own body. She dons a platinum blonde wig, and we are forced to see her enact a strange femininity. Gender truly is a performance, and one we all undergo each ... Read More

Nikki McClure, known for her intricate paper-cut art, will be displaying the original works featured in her 2014 Calendar, "Home," tonight at Land Gallery in Portland.
"Home" juxtaposes McClure's strong signature style with the delicacy of pastoral life, creating a somewhat eerie and nostalgic sensation. The artist creates her works using only a single sheet of black paper and an x-acto knife, making the pieces that much more awe-inspiring to witness in ... Read More

The Oregon Zoo just posted an adorable video of their two-month-old river otter Molalla learning to swim. Otter keeper Becca VanBeek explains that otters are practically immobile when they're babies, so Mo's mom Tilly has been easing him into the water. Baby Mo was as big as "a handful of jellybeans" (!!!) when he was born, but he's now a 2000-gram pup with "quite the personality."
To honor the first river otter born at Oregon Zoo, Metro is donating money from ... Read More

Portland's own Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside made their way to the BUST offices in NYC to soothe our aching earbuds with a stripped-down version of their rockabilly love song, "Shivers." Only two of the usual quartet made it out for this intimate performance, with Ford on acoustic guitar and lead guitarist Jeff Munger on electric guitar. Munger's classic country riffs and solo matched Sallie's soulful energy with ease. As one of the few audience members, I've ... Read More
