21 states have signed bills that deem it illegal to handcuff women while in labor and immediately after; however, correctional officers have taken on their own measures to “protect” citizens from these offenders. Despite what doctors have called life-threatening to both mother and child, women are still routinely shackled during and immediately after labor.
A New York Times article written by Audrey Quinn depicts this as regular part of the birthing ... Read More

On June 24th, troubled inmate Jane Doe assaulted yet another staff member and destroyed property in the Connecticut adult women’s prison where she had been detained in solitary confinement for 78 days. Young South African artist Reshma Chhiba recently created a bold art installation, and her work has sparked debates. Chhiba’s assignment was to craft something to memorialize the inhabitants of a former women’s prison in Johannesburg, a jail that once contained some amazing female activists who fought apartheid (like Winnie Madikizela-Mandela).
So what exactly did Chhiba make? A twelve meter long vagina crafted out of red velvet ... Read More
