Elections for the European Union will be held this Sunday, May 25th, and polls are predicting that Soraya Post will become the first candidate from the Swedish “Feminist Initiative” party (Fi) to take a seat in the EU parliament.   Soraya Post of the Swedish Feminist Initiative, Image Courtesy of  The Guardian  Fi’s feisty slogan, "Out with the racists, in with the feminists," makes the important point that feminism ... I’ve seen bell hooks speak a few times at my university, and every time, I’ve cried. For the uninitiated, hooks is the activist and author responsible for such eloquent, world-rocking works as Ain't I A Woman? and Feminism is for Everybody. However, yesterday, during her panel discussion with Janet Mock, Shola Lynch, and Marci Blackman (titled “Are You Still a Slave?”), hooks shocked everyone in the room by criticizing ... On Tuesday September 17th, TIME named Nancy Gibbs its new managing editor, as The New York Times reports. Gibbs is the first woman to be given this position in the magazine’s 90-year history. Can we all just revel in this glory, with a big YAY FOR LADIES IN PRINT MEDIA! Gibbs started as a TIME fact-checker 28 years ago, and over the course of working for the mag, she’s written more cover stories (ahem, 174 to be exact) than any other writer in TIME ... Read More
I’ll tell the story of “The Battle of the Sexes” the way it was told to me as a little girl on my way to my first national horse show. My father explained to me: Even after Title IX gave women athletes the rights to proper funding, the public did not have the same reverence for women’s sports as they did for men’s. Nowhere was this more apparent than in tennis. Former tennis star Bobby Riggs notoriously disrespected women and ... Read More
When Marissa Mayer was hired as Yahoo!’s new CEO last summer, feminists hoped that the pregnant business tycoon would advance the cause of women in the workplace. Unfortunately, it seems that Mayer might not be the feminist crusader that we hoped she would be. In a recent Yahoo!-wide memo, Mayer announced that “Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home. We need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together.” ...   This week's Time magazine cover story about Bill Sears has everyone up in arms. Even though the article is about Sears himself, the cover image shows a woman breastfeeding her large child, and the headline "Are you Mom Enough?' seems to be screaming "Lady, you are a freak!"  Even though the boy on the cover is apparently 3 years old, he looks to be about 5 or 6. Folks are saying this is pedophilia, and perverted. While everyone knows "breast is best" ... Read More
Despite my issues with TIME magazine, I love the annual “Most Influential” people list. Maybe it’s because it brings to my attention people around the world who are making changes (both positive and negative), or maybe it’s because they named me “Person of the Year” in 2006. Though TIME has yet to honor me and my greatness since 2006, they’ve honored more upstanding women than myself for 2012. Voting went live on Monday ... Read More
Imagine you’re on the elliptical at the gym or biking to work thinking about Snooki’s pregnancy, Obama, and global warming when you feel a twitch right under your biking shorts. The good twitch. You start to breath a little deeper and the tingles start building, like the rapid ticks of a time bomb. You know what’s going on with your body, but why here? Why NOW? No, this isn’t my attempt at a BUST One-Handed Read; a new Kinsey Institute ... Read More
If you walked by any sort of newsstand this past week or spent any amount of time on the internet, you’ve seen the newest cover of TIME Magazine. If not, you should. The story at its most basic is this: 18-year-old Bibi Aisha ran away from her Taliban-connected husband’s and in-laws’ home, where she lived in a barn with livestock and was treated like a slave. About a year ago, her husband found her in Kandahar, and in the seemingly opposite of ... Read More
