Whether it's witchcraft or bitchcraft, when it comes to television and film anything involving wizardry and badass ladies is completely up my alley - however many of these characters come in Sabrina Spellman blonde-hair-blue-eyed packages. Not to hate on the Sabrinas, Madison Montgomerys, or Hermione Grangers of the world, but I think it’s time we make some room for some WOC witches to tear shit up, because I mean, seriously, where would we be without Tituba ... My first foray into witchcraft began two summers ago, when I decided to try a love spell.  I have always been fascinated by the concept of witchcraft – a connection of one’s body, mind and soul into the earth around us – and luckily for me, my mother is totally obsessed with witches.  My family and I would always joke that my mother was a witch in a former life (although we did find that a distant relative on my father’s side was ... Being a Pagan in 2014 is weird. I can’t imagine where I’d be without the fantastic witchy bloggers I follow or the Etsy accounts that keep me in stock with my spells and crystals.  I won’t lie, I’m new to being a witch – but part of what I love about Paganism and Wicca is the rich history behind these beliefs.  Recently, LIFE Magazine re-published what they've called a “strikingly weird feature” about ... Witches are real and they do sail across the night sky on broomsticks. Well, more like plywood and canvas airplanes. This is what the Nazis thought of the “Night Witches,” a group of young Russian women volunteering themselves to fight (and fly) for their country. They flew under the moonlight, their only tools being maps and compasses—no parachutes, radios, or radars. They completed 30,000 missions over 4 years and dropped about 23,000 tons of ... Read More
The witchy masterminds behind Laughing Eye Weeping Eye make mystical synth-heavy songs that transcend the laws of time itself. LEWE is what it would feel like if you traveled back to the medieval era and chilled in some ancient castle, but the castle is haunted of course. The weirdo folk duo have just released their third LP and "Beway" is the title track. Spooky candle-lit walks in the night? Check. Colorful creatures of the occult? Check. Naked dancing witches? ... Kepari Leniata, a 20-year-old Papua New Guinean woman, was accused of witchcraft and burned alive on Wednesday. Relatives of a recently deceased 6-year-old boy alleged that Leniata’s sorcery was responsible for his death. For this crime, Leniata was stripped naked, tortured with an iron rod, doused in gasoline and set on fire. Pictures of this horrific event ran on the front page of both of Papua New Guinea’s daily newspapers. According to the Time ... Read More
I have been following Dame Darcy's career for several years, ever since we met on a book and music tour with Lisa Crystal Carver. Dame Darcy has been writing and illustrating a hilariously mischievous and zany comic book series called Meat Cake since those wonder years, in addition to writing music; making films, videos, dolls and crafts; performing sea shanties on a banjo while dressed as a mermaid; producing shows; painting murals; hanging out with ... Polish artist Katarzyna Majak explores female wisdom in her upcoming solo photography exhibit Women of Power at Porter Contemporary in New York. Fascinated by stereotypical witch imagery, Majak's images show women clutching their objects of power and emanating confidence and strength. The artist claims "A witch is a woman of knowledge who takes a broom and sweeps to cleanse the world," and her subjects seem to be cleansing the viewer with their piercing stares and ... Read More
