The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and the latest efforts by Susan G. Komen for the Cure appears to be a somewhat misguided attempt to promote the cause. A partnership between Komen and Baker Hughes, a Houston-based drilling service company, has left us questioning their current pink-washing method. The campaign, “Doing Our Bit for the Cure” involves a $100,000 donation from Baker Hughes to Komen, and 1,000 drill bits receiving the ... Read More
Imagine being sealed with your lover in a plastic bag, unable to breathe, your fleshy bodies pushing against each other, breaking the boundaries of the self. For the Japanese artist Photographer Hal, a mundane household item—a vacuum-sealable futon container—can visually bring to life the invisible emotional currents of love-making and sexual intimacy. He seeks out intriguing couples in bars, inviting them to sit for him in the nude; he then vacuum ... Read More
Model View Culture focuses tech, culture, and diversity media with online issues published every three weeks, and they rule. Their recent post "Shit Men Say to Women Founders" was so darn awesome, we're reblogging it here:  1. “Good luck with your project.” It's not a fucking project. It's a CORPORATION. It's an OFFICIAL, TAX-PAYING, CERTIFIED, DELAWARE-INCORPORATED business that is employing people, producing new products, ... Read More
We get loads of press releases here at BUST— sometimes about things that are really relevant to us and our readers, and sometimes, well, sometimes not. And the press release we received yesterday was just wrong in a thousand million ways. So wrong, in fact, that just describing it wouldn't be enough. Instead, we wanted to share the entire release with you. Granted, sharing it with you is exactly what the publicist was hoping for, but somehow we don't think ... Read More
The Village Voice reports that Kathleen Hanna is the set designer for Wicked Clown Love, an experimental performance piece by theatrical provocateur Neal Medlyn that is "built around the music and culture of hip-hop duo Insane Clown Posse, their devoted fan base the Juggalos, and other forms of male bonding and ritual." Yes, you read that correctly. New York venue The Kitchen  says that the piece ...will revolve around Medlyn's dark specter versions of ... Read More
For the past 11 years, the Toy Industry Association has crowned a "Toy of the Year," enlisting consumers, retailers, and journalists to help decide which toy/game deserves the title. There are 11 categories (including "Active Toy," "Boy Toy," "Educational Toy"), each with a winner--but only one toy/game can win the mother of all the awards. The awards seemed innocuous enough until I checked out the categories. First of all, toys are divided into “boy” ... Read More
Ladies, meet Peg Aloi. If you've been reading the internets in the past week, you may recognize her as the writer  who got the knitting, gardening, cupcake-baking, and feminist-thinking blogosphere in an uproar over an article she published at Huffington Post in which she asked, “Tough Gals: Do they still exist?” There, she basically called everything that is considered girly “weak,” and really pissed off a universe of cupcake baking, ... I love the internet, because it allows for pictures like this to be exposed to the world. I don't know how many times I've ordered a burrito and thought "I feel like I'm about to ingest an infant." Which I've always thought was a unique, vaguely disturbing thought- apparently it's not! This picture proves that I'm not a sicko! Hallelujah! Burritos have the same heft and warmth of a baby. Except burritos are significantly more delicious. This picture is also great ... Read More
